The haulage sector remains a cornerstone of the UK economy, keeping supply chains moving and ensuring that essential goods reach businesses and consumers every day. At
Palletline, we believe that supporting the long-term stability of this sector is both a commercial priority and a shared responsibility.
Recent increases in fuel costs are adding further pressure to operators across the country.
With oil prices rising in response to global factors, diesel costs have followed suit. For many hauliers, fuel represents one of the largest elements of their cost base, and increases are not always easily absorbed or passed on, particularly in a competitive market.
Palletline comprises a 100% member-owned network of 76 independent hauliers operating across 97 depots. These are well-established, regionally rooted businesses that play an important role within their local economies while contributing to a highly efficient, nationwide distribution model. The strength of the network lies in its collaboration, resilience, and shared commitment to service excellence.
Like many in the industry, our members are navigating a more complex operating environment, with fuel costs, market dynamics, and broader economic factors all influencing day-to-day operations.
Palletline supports the lead being taken by the Association of Pallet Networks and the Road Haulage Association around measures that could provide additional stability. Considerations such as fuel duty and payment practices are important areas where incremental improvements could make a meaningful difference to operators across the sector.
Graham Leitch, Group CEO of Palletline, commented: “Palletline is committed to supporting the industry as it adapts to evolving market conditions and also the APN in its continuing efforts to lobby Government.
“We welcome ongoing discussions around how best to support the sector, including measures that can help provide greater cost stability and improve cash flow. One such example is implementing a fuel surcharge which we introduced in the last fuel hike in 2020 and we would encourage the industry to do the same. A balanced and collaborative approach will ensure the industry remains resilient and well-positioned for the future.”
The pallet network model continues to offer an efficient and environmentally responsible approach to freight distribution, reducing empty running and lowering emissions through shared logistics. It is a model that delivers value for customers while supporting broader sustainability goals.
We believe that ensuring the sustainability of the UK haulage industry is essential to maintaining the flow of goods, supporting businesses, and protecting livelihoods across the country.
